We want to share this nice story that the El San Juan Hotel & Casino, Waldorf Astoria Collection sent us.
It's not participating in the contest since it involves many team members and departments, but it's a great example of what Service 24/7 is about:
“Invictus” has nothing on El San Juan
After over a year of changes, turmoil and expectations left wanting, The El San Juan more than just been the underdog came from nowhere to unite not just a team but a hotel and walked away with the “2010 Copa Turismo” Champions Trophy with a perfect 7- 0 record.
All started a month ago we had never thought about the possibility of creating a team of hotel and concessionaire employees to compete on an Island wide Basketball Tournament to collect funds for the “Fundacion de Becas” of the PR Hotel and Tourism Association.
HR recruited the most passionate coaches that among all the challenges or their daily work were willing to take time out of their work and personal life to lead this venture.
We recruited the Masters of the Masters:
Hugo Castro: F&B Director who’s role was to work with the psychology and the discipline of the players
Henry Torres: Banquet Houseperson who’s role was the strategy and analysis on how to play against each individual team player and the development of each of our players
Johnny Hernández: Banquet Server – was our statistical keeper, water boy and most important the one who was able to find us a court to practice every Monday and Wednesday
Chris Colón: Pool Concierge Manager became our talent recruiter who surprised us with food, beverages and transportation for the players. For Chris nothing is impossible.
Domingo Grillasca: Director of engineering who sent his wife, Seilly and family to surprise the team with hot dogs, pinchos and pizzas after the practice and the first game.
The El San Juan Team was:
Daniel - Landscaping #7
Luis – Housekeeping #2
Marcus – Steward #8
Christopher #4 and Christian # 10(the twins) – Pool
Joel – Pool #5
Manuel – Housekeeping # 9
Miguel - Yamato Restaurant steward #6
Ralph – Carpet Cleaning Company #3
Chelo – Bus person #1
Arnaldo- Bell person # 11
Ernesto- Security #12 (got hurt on the 4th game after and extraordinary performance)
These team was an example of discipline, unity, respect without any ego and most important of great faith when every practice and game will start and end with a prayer lead by each one of them. We enjoyed the time spent with all of them and see the camaraderie among the team and how they gain the respect of the Hotel Industry after winning the championship for the first time to this hotel participating in a Tournament like this. Scores speak more than words when 7 games were won by an average of over 25 points…..
This is what we call a DREAM TEAM
